Spreadsheet FAQ

March 23rd, 2008
  • What does this spreadsheet can do for me ?
The spreadsheet allows you to :

    • Compare to compare warlock spec and talents
    • Compare the relative dps increase of main dps stats : +dmg, +fire dmg, +shadow damage, hit rating, crit rating and haste rating.
    • Decide whether or not you should include certain spells in your “rotation”
  • Is this spreadsheet using 1 roll or 2 rolls for averaging a nukes damage given miss/crit/hit probabilites ?
    2 rolls
  • What is “effective cast time” ?
It is the spell cast time + lag + average recast time du to resist (for dots).
  • Why is there nothing about partial resist / penetration ?
    Good question
  • Does Curse of Doom benefits from Shadow Mastery ?
    That’s unfair, but no.
  • Are you planning to improve the spreadsheet ?
Yes, I keep improving the spreadsheet, you can check the Planned features page for more information
  • Where can I get more information and give feedback about the spreadsheet ?
    Try : http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t10065-another_warlock_dps_spreadsheet/.
  • I have an error about a circular reference on the DPS sheet, how do I solved It ?
    • In Excel : go to the Tool menu, select Options. Then go to the Calculation tab and put a check in the box next to ‘Iteration’. The default values for ‘Maximum iterations’ and ‘Maximum change’ are 100 and .001 on my machine and they both work fine. Also make sure the radio button next to ‘Automatic’ is selected instead of ‘Manual.’
    • In OpenOffice Calc : go to the Tools menu, select Options. Then go to the OpenOffice.org Calc -> Calculation page and put a check in the box next to ‘Iterations’.
  • After changing Items/Options the TNS values are way incorrect (like +100 dps for a point in dmg). How do I fix it ?
Try forcing the refresh of the Calculation by Pressing the F9 key
  • Why does the damage from Incinerate does not change when I remove Immolate from my cycle ?
Immolate is assumed to be always up.
  • In the “Items” tab, what exactly does the “Full Stats / Ignore hit” Value/DPS diff mean ?
    • Full stats value : the dps you would gain from equipping this item compared to no item, assuming no hit on it is wasted.
    • Full stats diff : the dps you would gain from equipping this item compared to the item you have equipped, assuming no hit on it is wasted.
    • Ignore hit value : the dps you would gain from equipping this item compared to no item, assuming all the hit on it is wasted.
    • Ignore hit diff : the dps you would gain from equipping this item compared to the item you have equipped, assuming all the hit on both is wasted.
  • Is there a way to upgrade my character sheet from an old version to the latest one, instead of filling in all the info ?
    Yes, to do so :

    • Open both the old and the new spreadsheet
    • On the old spreadsheet, on the Gear_Buffs tab, chose a set (for example “Custom Set 1″) and clic “Save Item Set”.
    • On the old sheet, open the “Item_sets” tab. If it is not visible, go to Format->Sheet->Show
    • Select the “Custom Set 1″.
    • Open the “Item_sets” tab on the new spreadsheet
    • Paste the column.
    • Check the number of rows ! You will probably have to insert one or two rows. For exemple, the versions prior to 2.5 did not have a socket for the cloaks.
    • Go to the Gear_Buffs tab and load “Custom Set 1″
  • .

Hi there, quick question on the Items Suggestions page.

What exactly does the DPS from Ignore Hit column mean? As opposed to the Full DPS column? I’m a bit confused as to the phrase “ignore hit”.

Feel free to email me!

The calculations for DPS values are done by multiplying each stat on the item with the coefficient for DPS gain per point you can find on the bottom of the DPS tab. The point of the ‘Ignore Hit’ list is that once you are at or over hit cap, hit does not actually continue to increase your DPS even though the Full Stats would show that it does.

To get the best of your gear, use the “Full Stats” until you are hit capped without gems, enchants, or gear being used specifically for +hit. Once you reach that point, switch to Ignore Hit. One good exception to make is that using a Scryer’s Bloodgem to account for 3% of your +hit makes it easy to swap gear to maxmimize youre DPS with an elemental shaman, while still being easily hit capped without them. Just as an FYI, 16% is the hit cap. You still have 1% chance to miss, but this is not mitigateable.

Hi. I m a spanish warlock that have a serious doubth. My guild is fighting with gurtogg,so I have been in Hyjal and the beggining of black temple. I have (with my buffs) about 1250 spelldamage and 205 hit. My doubth is: with that much hit, and Supression of course, I m in a % about 22% with AFLICCTION…so,even with the dual curses(life siphon life, that needs 4% more hit than the others)I m good at that point. However, about 25% of my damage in a serious boss comes from shadow bolt…so…Should I continue taking up my hit to improve my shadow bolts?
Thanks

(Sorry for my bad english)

And another question, those Excel documents are only for warlock destruction? Thanks again.

The hit cap is 202 hit rating (16%). At that point every spell you have will have a 99% chance to hit, which is the best you can do. Every point over 202 has no effect. Talent points in Suppression are useless at that point as well. The two most useful stats for your personal DPS are Haste and Spell Damage if you already have over 202 hit rating.

The spreadsheet is for ALL warlock specs, just adjust the spec on it to check Affliction or Demonology.

“Why is there nothing about partial resist / penetration ?
Good question”

Is there an answer to this?

The real answer to this question is that 1) it does affected all our spell the same way, whatever the gear/spec. 2) At the time I started the spreadsheet, I did not found precise data about partial resists.

I will add a damage modifier information soon, to take into account partial resists, BM hunters, Ret paladins (and manually, Mother Shahraz)

I was wondering Lag cell. I figure I’m supposed to input my normal latency figures, but does the spreadsheet in total account for any “quartz stopcasting?”

@atreyuu:
For all the T5 content and for the begenning of the T6, Felguard build does more dps than destruction IF your pet can dps all the time (it is what the spreadsheet assumes).

@Elane: “Lag” is the time between 2 consecutive spells. If you exactly chain cast, you can put 0 in it.

Great spreadsheet been using it since April. Was wondering if there was an update planned for Kiljaeden and Muru’s loot table?

Thanks again.

Hey, when I download this spreadsheet and fill in all my gear and such everything seems to be going fine. When I then save it and reopen it all the DPS values are set to #N/A.

Am I fucking something up ? Can’t seem to trace the error.

Using Excel 2003.

Could you explain Lag vs. avg dot gap?

Lag should be a small number (.05 when I downloaded it) to reflect the latency in the game?

Avg Dot Gap is how quickly I can re-dot a target when they expire, or is it the gap on global cooldowns and before I get the next dot cast? What do most normal non-uber raiders use, 1 second?

Thanks - awesome work!

If you’re getting #N/A or #WERT and hitting recalculate(F9) doesn’t fix the problem:

Temporarily turn off Lifetap, Darkpact, and any procs, hit F9, and if the program works, add the procs back.

The problem is that procs like lifetap, have rates which depend on all of the spells including lifetap. This is not a problem if there are reasonable values in the spreadsheet. it automatically runs over and over getting closer to the ideal answer.

But if there’s an #N/A it spreads through the sheet, and even if you correct the original problem, the new #N/A’s prevent the problem from clearing.

Seems like all the 0/21/40 templates uses the same talent spec. I had to redo my own 0/21/40 shadow spec which is fine but some people might not notice the faulty spec.
